BioPharma

The successful operation of biotechnology, life science and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities necessitates integration of environmental, health and safety (EHS) compliance requirements into complex facility and quality management systems such as Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Over the last 25 years, we have developed extensive BioPharma expertise, working across the EHS ecosystem to solve these challenges for our clients.

Some of the work we do includes:

  • Aiding in Air Plan Approval exemption applicability analysis through Permit-by-Rule for surface disinfection activities for facilities emitting less than 15 tons of volatile organic compounds (VOC) per 12-month rolling period
  • Evaluating the benefits and implications of maintaining synthetic minor air permitting status compared to obtaining Title V Operating Permit status which may offer production flexibility and room for rapid growth
  • Understanding the complexities of cleanroom controlled environments and ventilation intricacies related to fume hoods and exhaust from bench-top equipment such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) units
  • Assisting with emission sampling from process exhaust points such as reactor relief vents; open mixing during buffer preparation; and the use of process chemicals such as glacial acetic acid (GAA), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), Spor-Klenz®, and LpH®.
  • Conducting process hazard analyse(PHAs) for expanding operations in upstream and downstream processes in order to reduce risk to employees and production.
  • Creating wastewater models so that waste treatment can keep up with accelerated production.

Recently, we have been working in collaboration with BioPharma and Life Science companies to help meet the demands of vaccine production by modifying and expanding industrial wastewater treatment systems to increase production. We also deliver strategic, yet quick turn-around industrial wastewater and air permit modifications.

We work with companies of all sizes, from start-ups to the Fortune 500, and seven of the 20 largest life sciences companies in Massachusetts are current clients (according to the Boston Business Journal’s 2020 list).

MedTech

MedTech’s operations have distinct EHS challenges, and often the most efficient way to meet them is to bring in an expert to be part of the company’s EHS team. In this capacity, we work with companies to implement systems and programs to maintain conformance to the ISO 14001, 45001 and 13485 standards and to dovetail these with the regulatory requirements of the FDA and EPA.

Our team has experience with chemical processes such as decontamination and disinfection of medical devices, enabling us to set up the proper chemical tracking systems for reporting and permitting requirements. Our EHS-DashboardTM efficiently tracks material and chemical usage for easy reporting of EHS and sustainability metrics at the local, national, and global levels. Our engineers and scientists help to improve process efficiency, reduce chemical and water usage as well as waste generationWalso conduct industrial hygiene monitoring for air contaminants (e.g., air contaminants generated from 3D printing such as  volatile organic compounds, aldehydes and ultrafine particles; hexavalent chromium generated from welding of stainless steel) to protect workers and create safer work spaces.

We were the first EHS consulting firm to join MassMedic, and we frequently collaborate with them on educational outreach efforts, including past panel discussions for ADVAMEDFive of the top 1medical device firms in Massachusetts (according to the BBJ’s 2020 listare our clients, and our portfolio includes companies from start-ups to the Fortune 500.

Semiconductor/Electronics

The semiconductor and electronics industry faces heightened risk due to the types of chemicals used (e.g., metal organics, TMAH, toxic and pyrophoric gases)the complex processes, and increased stakeholder demand to accelerate sustainability.

We have deep experience with these challenges as they apply to the semiconductor industry and have successfully implemented Toxics Use Reduction (TUR) planning to manage risks from chemical hazards and to reduce chemical usage. Because this industry has many “Chemicals of Interest” we have assisted with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) site security plans including DHS inspection preparation since the inception of CFATS.

As on-site experts acting as part of a company’s EHS team, we implement management systems which are critical to this industry, including integrating ISO 14001 (EMS) and ISO 45001 (HSMS) standards into an EHSMS integrated planWhelp prepare for and participate in Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) auditsCurrently trending, we work with clients to develop sustainability programs, which include benchmarking, establishing metrics, and developing effective communication plans.

We are an active member of SESHA and have served on its board for the past six years.

Other Manufacturing

Unlike many EHS firms, we specialize in manufacturing industries, and as a result, we have developed extensive expertise, breadth, and knowledge into the specific challenges these firm face across a range of applications, including adhesives, aerospace, chemicals, food processing, industrial ceramics, industrial plating, metal manufacturing, plastics, paper products, and thermal processing.

100% of our client facing staff have scientific and/or engineering degrees and certifications, with more than 400 years of combined experience. We provide continuous training to ensure that our staff are up to date on all the latest requirements and best practices. Each of our professionals is dedicated to your success.

We are an active member of Associated Industries of Massachusetts (AIM).

“CAPACCIO’s staff not only possess the necessary competencies, but they are all experts and are compulsively motivated to do their best.  This is clearly what distinguishes CAPACCIO from their fellow competitors. ADI and CAPACCIO have fostered a long-term relationship because CAPACCIO has done an excellent job retaining talented environmental professionals.”
