What Is WEEE?
Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), is a
European Union (EU) Directive designed to control the disposal
and treatment of electrical and electronic waste at the
product's end of life.
The directive's intent is to reduce the impact of waste
(electrical and electronic equipment) to the environment
during the product life cycle and assign financial
responsibility for the process.
The WEEE Directive applies to ten categories of electrical and
electronic products:
-
Large household appliances
-
Small household appliances
-
IT and telecommunications
equipment
-
Consumer equipment
-
Lighting equipment
-
Electrical and electronic tools
(with the exception of large-scale stationary industrial
tools)
-
Toys, leisure and sports equipment
-
Medical devices (with the
exception of all implanted and infected products)
-
Monitoring and control instruments
-
Automatic dispensers
The WEEE Directive is defined through individual European
member state legislation (25 different laws and
registrations), which will encourage and set the criteria for
financial responsibility and the recycling & recovery of waste
for electrical and electronic equipment.
