What is an EMS, HSMS, EHSMS?
Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and Occupational Health
and Safety Management Systems (HSMS), can be certified to
independently accepted standards such as ISO 14001 international standard
or OHSAS 18001, or can be designed to meet specific regulatory
compliance objectives. Defined succinctly, an EMS or HSMS (or
integrated Environmental, Health and Safety Management System
(EHSMS) is a continuous cycle of planning, implementing,
checking and improving that a company uses to manage its
environmental, health and/or safety responsibilities. It is not limited to ISO
14001 or OHSAS 18001, although that model is well recognized and encompasses
over 20,000 organizations worldwide. An EMS, HSMS, or EHSMS builds upon
procedures an organization may already have in place to manage
a variety of environmental, health & safety, quality, and business issues.

Experience
Medical Device Manufacturer
Capaccio worked with a medical device manufacturer in Massachusetts
to assist them in integrating their Environmental Management System
(EMS) with their extensive quality control system. This client
has an elaborate quality control system that helps them to meet the
quality requirements of the Federal Drug Administration. The
EMS was successfully able to leverage off of these established
quality procedures. In particular, this medical device
manufacturer was able to use their existing document control,
training, system audit and corrective action procedures and
management review processes in their EMS. Both our client and
their registrar anticipate that next year they will be able to
combine the audits of the quality system and the EMS for a savings
in time and cost. Capaccio brought its experience with EMS to
the table and gained an understanding of their client’s Quality
System so that they could assist with developing documentation where
needed and advise their client on how to develop and implement a
successful EMS. Capaccio assisted in developing the training
that was used to create a strong awareness of the EMS by all of our
client’s employees.
Electronics Manufacturer
Capaccio assisted corporate
and worldwide manufacturing divisions in all aspects of developing,
implementing, and maintaining an integrated Environmental, Health,
and Safety (EH&S) Management System.. Systems have been
registered to ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 international standards. The
EH&S systems are integrated with other business systems and
functions to facilitate effective use of resources and communication
throughout the organization. Demonstrated performance
improvements have occurred as a direct result of these EH&S
management systems.
Automotive Fabric Coater
Capaccio took on a limited role of facilitating the development of
an ISO 14001 EMS. Capaccio met with the client on a regular basis to
discuss EMS development strategy. The client created most of their
documentation, with review and input by Capaccio. Capaccio trained
the client’s EMS Implementation Team, so that they would have a good
grasp of the ISO 14001 Standard. Capaccio conducted a comprehensive
audit of the facility in order to determine compliance with
applicable regulations.
Frequency Products Manufacturer
Capaccio assisted a client under a consent order to develop a
compliance-focused EMS utilizing the EPA model. We prepared an EMS
manual that integrated procedures and forms that would help our
client strive to be in compliance with all applicable local, state
and federal environmental regulations.
EMS Working Group
Capaccio partnered with the US EPA and companies in New Hampshire
and Maine who had an established EMS and hoped to help their supply
chain realize the benefits of a systematic approach. The host sites
provided the training facility and their experience while Capaccio
trainers provided the expertise to the attendees to develop their
EMS. Participants were given monthly assignments and could ask
Capaccio for direction in their EMS development as required. At
the final session (6 months later) participants gave a presentation
on their status.
